Into the Deep
Jennifer McNeely 2013
My new work is borne of, but not about, an illness. This illness and subsequent recovery took me on a journey to the deep: Into the cracks between spirit and science, the structures where humans look for assurance and calm. There is none of that serenity in these cracks. In this place exists the personal language of symbols and the shadow.
Most of us live in our heads, some in our bodies. When both are uncomfortable places to be, we seek comfort in spirit. Even that cannot hold us. This is the place that we run into ourselves, and our shadows in all its forms. The shadow is described as part of our consciousness that we often try to suppress and ignore. It is the parts of us we must recover to continue. On the hero’s journey, this is the struggle to slay the dragon.
Throughout this creative process, I tried to stay out of the way of the flow and use my editing eye from my experience as an artist. Some of the imagery came from dreams and from visions. Some I found to be nearly pre-verbal. Working this process was both challenging and artistically rewarding for me.
I am thrilled to be able to present this body of work that has been so healing and insightful to me personally.
